Aside from opening my house to all and sundry, be they family or strangers, I suppose the biggest impact I have on Jerusalem is by living here. Staking my claim to our heritage. For 2000 years we were exiled and now I am living here freely. Every step I take impacts Jerusalem. How much more so over a million other residents and millions of tourists?!
I've done a lot of different things but my most incredible 'job' has been working in the gift shop at City of David. It's become my most favorite place. I have met so many wonderful, inquisitive tourists, I invite some of them for Shabbat! But to go out of the shop and show them where they are standing spiritually and geographically, it's just breathtaking. I will never tire of that holy place! While we have been on a very long break through Corona, I have been learning Shmuel Bet with four different lecturers. Each one with a different approach. Because when I go back to my job, I want to feel like I know every aspect of City of David.
I'm a very small influencer. As a community of one, I reach Anglos who are in similar situations single/divorced/widowed and they join me for Shabbat/Chag meals and activities. I have a singles Facebook group of 500 people ranging in age from 50+ and we meet up monthly. I make shidduchim marriages and friendships which are the most important shidduchim of all!
I'm not a big project person. I'm more methodical in my undertakings. I'm not a public entity, so doing large things is rather overwhelming. With Corona, I have found that planning and executing these plans is a multi step very difficult process. Even going to buy milk at the makolet is a process. And so my plans are to go on as usual...live, love, enjoy and one day life might go back to 'normal' but hopefully better.
Just do it!
